Tuning Linux for Virtual Machines for performance

This session will take the attendees through a number of ways to optimize Linux virtual machines for performance, using strategies that improve individual VM performance as well as the global performance of their VMware vSphere environment.
Most of these topics will be technical in nature, such as aligning disk partitions, changing the disk queue elevators, configuring NTP, etc. However, among the technical points I will also touch on policy and softer topics, such as scheduling backups so they are not simultaneous, using multiple smaller VMs to help spread workloads out, thinking about ways to reduce disk I/O for applications, etc. I am aiming to augment what otherwise would be a technical checklist with relevant and informative commentary, hopefully answering the “why” and “when” questions rather than just “how.” While my points will indicate how to implement these tips, a basic level of familiarity with Linux, specifically command-line interfaces and editors, will be assumed.
